Ingredients
Scale
- 10–12 dried arbol chilies
- 2 medium tomatoes
- 2 cloves of garlic
- 1/4 cup of onion
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt (or to taste)
- 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup of water (adjust for consistency)
Instructions
- Heat a dry skillet over medium heat and toast the dried arbol chilies for about 1-2 minutes, turning occasionally, until they become fragrant but not burnt.
- Remove the stems and seeds from the chilies, then set them aside.
- In the same skillet, roast the tomatoes, garlic, and onion until the tomatoes’ skins start to blister and the garlic becomes soft (about 5-7 minutes).
- Add the toasted chilies, roasted tomatoes, garlic, onion, and salt into a blender or food processor.
- Add the water and blend until smooth, adding more water if necessary to achieve your desired consistency.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Once hot, pour the salsa into the pan and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally to combine the flavors.
- Remove from heat and allow the salsa to cool before serving.
