Description

Chili de Arbol Salsa is a flavorful, smoky, and spicy Mexican salsa made with dried arbol chilies, garlic, and tomatoes. It’s a perfect topping for tacos, grilled meats, or even as a dip for chips. This salsa brings heat and depth of flavor to any dish, and it’s quick and easy to prepare!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1012 dried arbol chilies
  • 2 medium tomatoes
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1/4 cup of onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt (or to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup of water (adjust for consistency)

Instructions

  • Heat a dry skillet over medium heat and toast the dried arbol chilies for about 1-2 minutes, turning occasionally, until they become fragrant but not burnt.
  • Remove the stems and seeds from the chilies, then set them aside.
  • In the same skillet, roast the tomatoes, garlic, and onion until the tomatoes’ skins start to blister and the garlic becomes soft (about 5-7 minutes).
  • Add the toasted chilies, roasted tomatoes, garlic, onion, and salt into a blender or food processor.
  • Add the water and blend until smooth, adding more water if necessary to achieve your desired consistency.
  • Heat the vegetable oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Once hot, pour the salsa into the pan and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally to combine the flavors.
  • Remove from heat and allow the salsa to cool before serving.

Notes

  • Spice Level: The heat of this salsa can be adjusted by using fewer chilies or removing some of the seeds from the arbol chilies.
  • Storage: This salsa can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
  • Extra Flavor: For a smoky flavor, consider adding a small piece of roasted chipotle pepper.
